How Teacher for a Teacher Works
TFT is a digital welfare platform for KUPPET Busia teachers. Behind the scenes, the system manages welfare events, monthly contributions, debts, and disbursements so that when a teacher or dependant is affected, support is fast, transparent, and accountable.
What happens in the platform
- Teacher registers and is verified– A teacher signs up with their phone, PIN, TSC number and school. The backend's
auth,teacher, andgeomodules make sure the identity, county, sub‑county and school data are correct. - Dependants and beneficiaries are declared – Using the teacher module, each teacher records the family members they want covered so that future disbursements automatically know who is eligible.
- Welfare events are opened and tracked – When there is a bereavement or hospitalization, the
eventmodule opens an official welfare event, with approvals, coverage rules and accountability logs. - Contributions are made via M‑Pesa – The
paymentmodule initiates M‑Pesa STK Push requests. Every contribution is stored as integer cents in Postgres and written inside a transaction, so there are no floating‑point surprises. - Obligations and debts stay in sync – If someone misses a contribution, the
debtmodule keeps a ledger of what is owed and when it is settled, so the welfare scheme can remain fair without guesswork. - Funds are pooled and disbursed – The
fundmodule manages the county and buffer funds and automates disbursements to the affected teacher or their registered dependants, following the configured rules. - Notifications keep everyone informed – The
notificationmodule uses Kafka only for SMS and WhatsApp alerts (via Africa's Talking), so members know when a welfare event opens, contributions succeed, or payments are sent.
